Cullinan owes its existence to the discovery of diamonds on the farm Elandsfontein which was purchased from the Prinsloo family shortly after the Boer war at the turn of the last century. Thomas Major Cullinan was convinced that a Kimberlite pipe was situated on the higher ground of the farm, and as the Prinsloo family was in desperate need of cash after the war they reluctantly agreed to the sale of the farm to Cullinan. The Premier Syndicate was registered on 6 November 1902 and shortly afterwards became the Premier (Transvaal) Diamond Mining Company. Prospecting began immediately and in 1903 William McHardy was employed as a general manager. He lived in a tent with his wife and seven children until his house was completed. The house still exists and is today a museum open to visitors on Sundays and Public Holidays. Contact Cullinan Online to make a booking for a visit.
History was made on 25 January 1905 when Fred Wells found the Cullinan Diamond weighing in at 3106 carats. The stone was bought by the then Transvaal Government and presented to King Edward. The diamond was cut by Joseph Ascher of Amsterdam into nine major stones and many smaller brilliants. The larger stones today form part of the Crown Jewels and visitors to Cullinan have the opportunity to go on various tours of the mine, both above and underground and have the opportunity to acquire diamonds at the source! The discovery of the Cullinan diamond catapulted the dusty mine town into what is today Cullinan Village and the current owners of the mine, Petra Diamonds, continue to extract approximately 25% of the worlds largest and most sought after diamonds.
